Hi, my name is Terrell Thornton, and I desperately need your help to correct my wrongful conviction.
On August 9th, 2011, a convicted murderer was seen by police running away from the rear of a burning building with his hands on fire. Upon seeing the police, the burning man ran in the opposite direction and jumped a privacy fence.
Police officers brought the burning man back over the fence. At which time the burning man held his hands up as if under arrest and asked: "How bad does it look?" Police put him in a safe location as they went to rescue people from the building. After ten minutes they returned to the convicted murderer and asked "who started the fire?" The burning man said, "Terrell Thornton set the building on fire and left in a grey truck in an unknown direction."
Fire officials determined the fire started in the rear of the building where the man was seen running from. Police testified that he was out of the building and running before anyone else was aware the building was on fire.
Thanks to Legal Access Plus we have discovered police interviews we were never provided during my trial or prior appeals, where witnesses identified someone else as the arsonist. We found suppressed photographs proving the officer in charge of the case fabricated identifications.
A new witness has come forward stating I was not the man he saw set the fire. Moreover, a witness who testified to seeing me with a gas can has recanted.
In addition, a fire expert has filed a report stating the State's fire investigation was deeply flawed. I have evidence that multiple police witnesses gave false testimony at my trial. The officer in charge gave false testimony to bind me over from my preliminary examination. There are so many other facts proving my innocence and egregious police misconduct.
The Michigan Court of Appeals overturned the conviction from my first trial finding that my alibi witnesses were credible. At my second trial, my attorney did not interview or present my alibi witnesses. He filed a notice of alibi where he even misspelled their names.
My Judge was so compelled by the probability of my being innocent that she referred my case to Wayne County's Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU). The Conviction Integrity Unit has had the case for three years now. Every day I sit in prison for a crime I did not commit, my life is in danger.
I want to go to college via a correspondence course through Adams State University Extended Studies to Earn my Paralegal Certification. I would like for someone to help me get the word out about what has been done to me. I want to go to college so I can fight for myself. The paralegal course is over two thousand dollars with books.
